Act I

The Subtropical North

Far North · Ninety Mile Beach · Waipoua Forest

The road begins where the country runs out. At Cape Reinga two oceans collide in plain sight, and the only way from here is south.

Ninety Mile Beach is not a road, but it is a highway — you ride on the wet sand at the edge of the surf, and the tide decides your schedule.

Then the dunes give way to the kauri forest, and the light goes green and heavy. Tāne Mahuta has been standing here for two thousand years. You stop. You are very small, and very far from home.

Act II — the road turns green
